When to Start Preparing Your British Citizenship Documents

You've been granted Indefinite Leave to Remain, congratulations. But what happens next, and when should you start getting ready to apply for British citizenship?

For many people, naturalisation is the natural next step after ILR. The good news is that you don't have to sit and wait you can begin organising your documents well before your application window even opens.

The Twelve-Month Wait: Use It Wisely

Once ILR is granted, you must hold that status for 12 months before you can apply for British citizenship through naturalisation.

However, the rules allow you to submit your application up to 28 days before that 12-month period is complete, which gives you a small but useful window to act early.

In the meantime, your ILR allows you to live and work in the UK indefinitely with no restrictions but getting ahead of your naturalisation paperwork now will save you considerable stress later.

What Documents Will You Need?

Every naturalisation application will require the following:

  • Proof that you have not spent more than 90 days outside the UK in the previous 12 months

  • Evidence of your UK residence: utility bills, a tenancy agreement, or bank statements

  • Photo ID, ideally a valid passport

  • Confirmation your ILR/Settled status

  • Proof of your relationship status (if applicable)

  • Evidence of your English language ability

  • Confirmation that you have passed the Life in the UK Test

  • Two suitable referees: one should be a professional who has known you for at least three years; the other must be a British citizen professional or aged 25 or over

  • Certified translations of any documents not already in English

If you already passed the Life in the UK Test or an English language test as part of your ILR application, you will not need to repeat either.

A Simple Guide to Timing

Not every document has the same shelf life. The table below shows when you should be gathering each item:

Keeping Your Documents Safe

Your naturalisation application represents months in some cases years of life in the UK. The last thing you want is to lose a critical document at the final hurdle. Here are some practical steps to protect everything you have gathered:

  • Photograph every document as you collect it

  • Scan hard copies using a printer or a scanning app on your phone

  • Store digital copies in a clearly labelled folder, ideally on cloud storage for easy access

  • Keep any relevant emails in a named folder in your inbox, and consider downloading or printing important ones

  • Place original documents in plastic wallets to prevent damage

  • Bring everything together in a ring binder labelled clearly as your naturalisation documents, and store it somewhere safe and accessible
